The Brandenburg Gate, built in the 1790s to provide a point of controlled access to and departure from Berlin, is one of the main symbols of Berlin and Germany. The Brandenburg Gate is one of a series of gates through which one entered Berlin, but is the only remaining gate. The Berlin Wall was erected just west of the gate, cutting off access from West Berlin until the German reunification in 1989.
