Grapes have been a food staple of humans for over 2,000 years. Besides wine production some varieties are grown specifically for table service. Grapes grow in bunches or muscadines, which are clusters of four or more grapes. In addition, grape varieties include wine, seedless grapes, or scuppernongs, which is a variety of muscadine that is amber-yellow in color. Grapes vines can produce fruit for more than 50 years and are quite tolerant of soil, ph, and drought. When one speaks of "cool climate," the Lake Michigan area provides a cool air movement off the great lake. Of the several thousand acres of grapes in the entire Southwest Michigan region, the most predominant at Pointe Blanc Wineries are Concord, Chardonnay, Niagara, Vidal Blanc, Vignoles, and Riesling. |
